"The Greatest" Muhammad Ali
MEMORIES OF MUHAMMAD ALI
The “Memories of Muhammad Ali Quilt’ was made by Dr. Dotty Heady. Dr. Heady donated it to Phoenix Global Humanitarian Foundation with the vision that the guilt would be presented to Mrs. Lonnie Ali, and that it would go on tour as a powerful, artistic educational piece that would honor “the greatest, Muhammad Ali.” Upon receiving such a special and distinct donation, Dr. Campbell contacted Shelly Zegart, Founder of the Kentucky Quilt Project to get her professional expertise on such an important piece. After seeing the quilt, Ms. Zegart played a monumental part in the quilt’s professional appraisal. She spent committed, heartfelt, volumes of time with Dr. Campbell explaining proper care and storage of the quilt. Dr. Campbell then contacted, and had frequent discussions with Ambassador Shabazz, who is a life time friend of the Ali’s family about the quilt, its being donated to Phoenix Global Humanitarian Foundation, and the donor’s desire for the quilt to be given to Mrs. Ali. Upon seeing the quilt, Ambassador Shabazz suggested that at the appropriate time, that perhaps the Quilt might be given to Mrs. Ali as a birthday present. Phoenix Global Humanitarian Foundation entrusted the Quilt to Ambassador Shabazz to be presented to Mrs. Ali.
On Thursday, June 6, 2019, during the historical dedication of the Muhammad Ali International Airport, Louisville's Mayor, Greg Fischer presented Mrs. Lonnie Ali a surprise birthday present, the “Memories of Muhammad Ali quilt. Mrs. Ali expressed her thank you, and said “even after the Quilt’s tour is complete, it still has to be shared.”
Phoenix Global Humanitarian Foundation was very proud to be a part of this historic, major event honoring "the greatest" who exemplifies the symbol of the phoenix, “the ultimate symbol of strength.” We are also honored to pay homage to, and recognize a strong and powerful woman such as Mrs. Lonnie Ali.

Humanitarian Quilts
BY: DR. DOTTY HEADY
Here at Phoenix Global Humanitarian Foundation, we know that sometimes all it takes to change the world is a little support. Since our founding in 2008, we have been determined to make an impact. The core of our efforts is to engage in work that provides opportunities for those we serve to improve their living conditions and eliminate suffering from lack of basic needs.
“Any time women come together with a collective intention, it's a powerful thing. Whether it's sitting down making a quilt, in a kitchen preparing a meal, in a club reading the same book, or around the table playing cards, or planning a birthday party, when women come together with a collective intention, magic happens.”

Dr. Martin Luther King
DR. DOTTY HEADY IS THE CREATOR OF QUILTS THAT ARE A PART OF THE PHOENIX GLOBAL HUMANITARIAN FOUNDATION’S “TRIBUTE TO HUMANITARIANISM”. DR HEADY CALLS HERSELF A CATALYST, A PERSON WHO BRINGS ABOUT CHANGE AND A DIFFERENT ROUTE OF LEARNING. SHE CREATES THE QUILTS TO “TELL A STORY, PAINT A PICTURE OR TAKE A WALK-THROUGH HISTORY.” DR HEADY BECAME INTERESTED IN PHOENIX GLOBAL HUMANITARIAN FOUNDATION AFTER SHE WAS INTRODUCED TO THE FOUNDATION BY HER FORMER DOCTORATAL STUDENT COHORT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE FOUNDATION, DR. RENEE CAMPBELL. SHE WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT THE INITIATIVES OF THE ORGANIZATION THAT SHE BEGAN TO CREATE QUILTS THAT WOULD EDUCATE PEOPLE BY WEAVING HISTORY INTO THE QUILTS, AND BRING AWARENESS TO THE FOUNDATION’S HUMANITARIAN INITIATIVES.
DR. HEADY SAYS, “AS FAR AS THE QUILT HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, “I SAY I MAKE ‘INTERPRETIVE ART QUILTS’ THAT HANG ON A WALL AS AN ART FORM, RATHER THAN GO ON A BED! AS I WAS MAKING THE MLK QUILT- I THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT ALL THE MAN STOOD FOR. I LOCATED PICTURES THAT TOOK HIM FROM THE BEGINNING (HE LOOKED SO YOUNG IN THE PICTURES) THROUGH HIS LIFETIME. I THOUGHT ABOUT HOW HE TOUCHED MY LIFE AND MADE ME REALIZE THAT BECAUSE I WAS A WOMAN, WAS NOT A GOOD EXCUSE TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO HOLD ME BACK OR PUT ME DOWN, THAT I DESERVED A CHANCE TO EARN A SCHOLARSHIP IN MATH, APPLY FOR AN EXECUTIVE LEVEL POSITION, EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE GLASS CEILINGS IN PLACE TO TRY AND STOP ME.”
“I THOUGHT ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO TRIED TO PUT HIM DOWN AND NOT ALLOW HIM TO SPEAK AND YET HE HAD SOMETHING SO RIGHT TO SAY THAT HE WAS HEARD. I THOUGHT ABOUT THE HISTORY HE WAS MAKING AT THE TIME AND TRIED TO REPRESENT IMPORTANT EVENTS SO THAT SOMEONE LOOKING AT IT COULD SEE HOW GREAT A MAN HE WAS. I WANT EVEN A PERSON WHO DID NOT KNOW HIM, OR KNOW OF HIM, TO SEE THE ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL RESULTS OF THE THINGS HE HELPED TO CHANGE IN OUR COUNTRY.”
